Introduction to a Pom Girl

Hello everyone! My name is Peyton Mackay and I'm a junior advertising major and a communication minor here at OU! I'm originally from a small town in the mountains of Colorado. A lot of people ask me why I chose to come to Oklahoma for school. I came here for a lot of different reasons! First of all, I had family friends go here and I heard nothing but great things; once I visited, I was sold! Second, have you ever been to an OU Football game? It's one of the most amazing experiences. Finally, a big reason I chose to come to OU is because I'm a member of the OU Pom Squad! Being on Pom is so exciting. I've got to travel to so many different places and have gotten so many cool opportunities from it! Most recently, I got to travel to California for the Rose Bowl and parade. That will forever be a highlight in my life.

This past weekend, my team and I went to the national championships in Orlando, Florida and we placed third! That's the highest placement in the history of OU Pom and we got to bring home a bronze medal! I've worked for that most of my life and it felt amazing to finally accomplish that goal.

(After placing third at the National Championships!)

At home in Colorado, I have two dogs that I love and miss dearly. They are my babies and it's hard being away from them the majority of the year, but every time I go home I'm welcomed by lots of snuggles by them! I'm not exactly sure what I want to pursue after graduation, but my main goal is to get a job. I also hope to work someplace really cool, maybe in my favorite place (London!). For now, I'm going to enjoy college and the places it takes me.

  1. What a great picture, Peyton! Wow! How great that you were in the actual Rose Bowl Parade: that is one of those stories you can tell your grandchildren about! And I do not know all the connections between pom and cheer and spirit, but it looks like there are several people in class this semester who are involved in that, so hopefully you will find each other to meet up here virtually! And congratulations on your victory: there are hours and months and years of work that you put into those skills; I am glad for you and all your teammates. CONGRATULATIONS! Maybe your sweet dogs can be in some of your stories this semester... who knows: they could even go to London, and your could have them meet up with some famous dog legends of the British Isles! With the power of imagination, everything is possible. :-)

  2. Hey Peyton! It's so cool that you not only got to go to the Rose Bowl but that you were also in the parade. You might know my friend Austin as he moonlights as a mascot for OU Spirit. He was absolutely devastated when we lost. It's so cool that you got to travel to California for it. Have you been anywhere other than Pasadena? I have been to LA and San Francisco. You should definitely check San Francisco out, LA not so much.

  4. Hi Peyton! First of all, congratulations to you and your team! I can't imagine the dedication that goes into keeping up with both that and school. I'm from out of state too, and I agree that I immediately got wrapped up in OU football. I've only been to Colorado once, and it wasn't for long enough! You guys have a beautiful state.

Also, you're dogs seem awesome. I have two dogs as well, getting that puppy love on my visits home are the best! I think its also cool that you are from Colorado! I've been there several times, its one of my family's favorite go-to vacations. I hope you have a great time here at OU, and I wish you the best of luck with your schooling and your pom!

  8. Hey Peyton! I'm not sure if I we have met in person before, but I am actually a member of Pi Phi with you! I think that is really impressive that you are able to balance so many activities with academics. Also, that is so cool that you got to travel to California and cheer at the Rose Bowl with the OU Pom Team. I went to the Rose Bowl too, and it was an awesome experience (I wish OU would have won though).

  11. Peyton,

What an exciting time it must've been to go to the Rose Bowl! Also, congrats on your bronze. I didn't realize that OU Pom was so nationally competitive. I also think that advertising and communication go really well together... learning both the theory and the practical application is incredibly useful in terms of looking for a career. I'd also love to hear more about your time in London!

  12. Hi Peyton,

I'm so jealous that you got to go to the Rose Bowl! I have always loved watching it on TV. I didn't know that Pom competed at a national level, so that was cool to learn and also congratulations on placing third! I have some friends that are really big into dance and I know how much work goes into perfecting a routine.

  13. Hi Peyton!
Congratulations on making the pom team! I'm sure the being in the Rose Bowl is something that you will remember forever. It is certainly an opportunity that most don't have. I'm sure that I couldn't do what you do. I have very little rhythm and or dancing skill. You probably have a lot of talent to do what you do!

  16. Hey Peyton,

I'd imagine the move from a small town to a big university like OU must have been quite the change! I have a friend from Texas who graduated from a private high school with a class of seven other people and then came right to OU. The change was pretty shocking for him. And I bet the traveling you get to do with OU Pom is amazing!

  17. Hey Peyton,

Going to the Rose Bowl seems like it would definitely be a highlight of your life! Being on the pom team must be an amazing experience, especially placing third! That takes a lot of hard work and determination! It must of been an interesting experience coming from a small town in Colorado to a large campus like OU. I bet it was easy to adjust with the pom squad being close.
